This travel writer thinks Jiufen is overrated, but he still loves Taiwan

"There are very few countries that I love as much as Taiwan. It is, in my opinion, the most underrated destination in Asia, and maybe one of the most underrated destinations in the world."

This video on TaiwanPlus features Dr Lin Yih-ren talking about his work with Tayal people in the Jianshi District of Hsinchu Country. It shows how projects such as the Millet Ark and student art classes help to preserve Indigenous culture and knowledge

🌻 Today is the 12th anniversary of Taiwan's Sunflower Movement. Students occupied the Legislative Yuan for 24 days in opposition to the Cross-Strait Service Trade Agreement. The movement was successful in stopping the Agreement. It also led to the creation of new movement parties and promoted greater youth participation in politics

🌎 Globally, democracy has regressed to the level it was at in 1978, during the Cold War. Just 7% of the world's population lives in liberal democracies. The US has been downgraded from a liberal democracy to an electoral democracy.

These are some of the findings of the annual V-DEM Democracy Report

Some advice about working in the field of Taiwan Studies

"Compared to [China Studies, Japan Studies and Korea Studies], Taiwan Studies is much more politically sensitive, smaller in size, and younger in age, though of increasing importance. As a result, much of the research funding and programme infrastructure supporting other regional fields is still underdeveloped for the field of Taiwan Studies."

Sansa Public School Veneration Hall (三叉公學校奉安殿)

Located in Sanyi Township, Miaoli County, it's one of only three Japanese-era veneration halls still standing in Taiwan today

A Taiwanese Indigenous group was booked to perform at the AFC Asia Cup semi-final match between Taiwan and China in Perth on Friday night. Their performance was cancelled at the last minute for "political reasons" Video on Instagram by FTV News featuring a member of the group: https://www.instagram.com/reel/DV26xU3jeiH/?igsh=MTNpamUwbjluNHVkbw== Related Post on Threads (1): https://www.threads.com/@angela7235/post/DV3iKNZkX64?xmt=AQF0WYytD9Vttjn9KxRjXwgaQ20J6ool_bvoJolSqMZaU11BBaS0YcWPhGOrrddKNtHV2XSb&slof=1 Related Post on Threads (2): https://www.threads.com/@9m121688/post/DV3oUy6Eau8?xmt=AQF09H0glSfCk6E-_r9cWpQlAuaLV3zLtETW7EMmTuiwun9oAbNhV_z0BPsfX8cYcyLZNw9c&slof=1 #Taiwan #China #AFC #football #auspol #台灣

Interview with anthropologist Gerald Roche about China’s new Ethnic Unity Law

"If you look at the linguistic practices of people across China, you will start seeing the impact from this law 10 years from now. But those impacts will be permanent."

Taiwanese man, Chen Kuei-jen, ejected from Australian football stadium for using the word "Taiwan"

“We’re Taiwanese people, not Chinese Taipei people,” Chen said.

“With all the geopolitical history and tensions, there’s a reason why we have to compete as Chinese Taipei, but how can you censor a whole group of people chanting the name of their country? They already did a good job confiscating flags and shirts with ‘Taiwan’ on them.”

There has been an almost complete cessation of PLA air activity in the Taiwan Strait over the past ten days. The reasons for this are unclear

"Ultimately, the temporary absence of PLA aircraft should not be interpreted as a reduction in Beijing’s pressure on Taiwan. It is more likely a short-term anomaly within a broader pattern of sustained coercion."

⚾ Premier Cho Jung-tai’s (卓榮泰) visit to Tokyo to watch a game of the World Baseball Classic indicates that Japan is redefining the boundaries of its relations with Taiwan

"The space for Taiwan-Japan interaction appears to be gradually expanding, and the limits of engagement may no longer be defined solely by Beijing."

New report from the Uyghur Human Rights Project about how the Chinese party-state systematically disrupts communication between the Uyghur diaspora and their families in East Turkistan

"The separation of Uyghur families is neither incidental nor temporary, but rather a deliberate strategy of transnational repression."
